Indeed, this view steals benevolence and reason from the act of helping others. To engage in that act for the sole motive of doing it is not proper.

Men were asked (or forced) to sacrifice for the sake of the tribe in order to save the tribe from the wrath of the gods. This practice was common in many of the earth’s religions and so was not unique to Christianity in spite of the fact that there is very little to be found in Judaism on the issue. The practice of crucifixion was a Roman/Greek form of punishment. Remember Prometheus who was hung on a tree and was renewed each day in order to suffer the same punishment for bringing light to man. And what of Odin?
